Meet Our Team > Joanna Kabat

Joanna Kabat, Philanthropy and Capacity Building Advisor, has dedicated her career to supporting social justice organizations. Her consulting practice includes supporting organizations with developing philanthropic strategy, team and systems development, relationship building with external funders and community partners, and volunteer engagement and management. Joanna brings her deep expertise on the philanthropic sector to ensure funding, budgeting, and donor relations are considered in all strategic planning and processes.

For a decade Joanna worked at Liberty Hill Foundation, where she oversaw the expansion of capacity building programs through the Wally Marks Leadership Institute, which integrated nonprofit organization development with leadership development training and long-term campaign strategies. A cornerstone of Joanna’s work was the management and strategic oversight of competitive grantmaking programs for the foundation, which included ongoing community engagement and participatory decision-making processes.

Joanna also has experience in faith-based organizing, working on international development, youth engagement, refugee assistance, and immigration policy. Joanna studied English literature and human rights at Barnard College, and returned to her hometown of Los Angeles to study public policy and administration at the University of Southern California. When she is not reimagining the balance of power in philanthropy, she is chasing after her kids, watching Star Trek reruns, writing poems, or hiking in the local mountains.
